In a statement, former world champion, who for two years after admitting using EPO was banned but now a member of WADA's Athletic Commission banned the requirements that life was not fair.

He said, “Every doping case is different, as is every human being, we must not forget this. We expect fairness to be an integral part of the sports we watch, and yet fairness can be hard to find in the punishments of those athletes who make mistakes.

“A lifetime ban for a first offence does not encourage rehabilitation nor education, two things that are necessary for the future prevention of doping in sport.

“I hope this decision will pave the way for the development of global sports, and to creating a system that all athletes and sports fans can understand and believe in.”

Millar said it was important that the WADA doping code of the investigation and punishment for criminals was a point of reference.

“We no longer live in a sporting world where we are governed independently by regional or national bodies, sport is now competed on an international stage bigger than ever before and for that reason needs to be governed by international all-encompassing rules.

“We have a code that exists in world sport, it is called the WADA Code, it is constantly being revised in order to stay up to date with the latest anti-doping and judiciary developments.

“The WADA code sets the standard in sport and it is one that all national governing bodies should operate under. Whatever the sport may be, from playing with a ball on a pitch, running in lanes on a track, or even racing bicycles through our city streets, each competitor should be subject to the same rules.

“This is not to help the person who cheats or errs, it is there to protect the athletes who respect the rules. Each time those athletes step into competition they need to know that everybody they compete against is held accountable to one code.”

“Holy Moly,” gulped Pendleton. “Can I have that in writing as a guarantee? If only life was that simple, if only everyone understood how much strategic planning, training, preparation and pain goes into an Olympic cyclist’s programme.

“As an athlete, the greatest pressure to succeed comes from within – but you also have to maintain a sense of perspective.

“You can’t be expected to break your personal best, or world records, every time you hop on a bike, that consistency of performance is simply not possible. Not many competitors, in any sport, can go out and be the best at what they do week after week after week.

“But, unfortunately, some of us are judged on what we have achieved in the past and are expected to live up to it.”

Queen Victoria Regal's presence in the velodrome, but it is expected that under load. Pendleton sprints to Olympic title in Beijing, the currency has become a valuable sports, she is now home to the London Olympics is expected to bring billions.

But she is filled with self doubt, and that golden smile back on the podium, it's the same story three years ago in China.

She said: “I’d be lying if I said I never had any doubt about winning my gold medal in Beijing.

“For a week I spent a lot of time on my own in the athletes’ village, and when I saw everyone else winning their races I thought, ‘Oh no, I’ve got to do it now – I can’t let the side down.’

“Thank the Lord I won, and I was able to be part of the gang, to feel part of the team.

“Years earlier, when I had started training with the elite squad, among the likes of Chris Hoy, Jason Queally and Jamie Staff, I was just an insignificant kid who was desperate to be part of their crowd.

“I worried about letting the side down if I had come a cropper in Beijing, and I don’t want to mess it up next year because there will be no second chances. The Olympics Games won’t be coming back here in my lifetime.”
