Schoolgirl Ruta Wins gold at London 2012 Olympics

The 100m breatstroke at the London 2012 Olympic Games has been won by a Plymouth schoolgirl Ruta Meilutyt.

In the 100 metres breaststroke tonight the schoolgirl won a gold medal for Lithuania.

Since the start of competition Ruta leds and finish to touch in one minute 05.47 seconds.

Meilutyte is coached by Jon Rudd at Plymouth Leander while studying at Plymouth College, the school also attended by diver Tom Daley.

``I cannot believe it,'' Meilutyte told BBC One.

“It’s too much for me.”

Looking at the camera and speaking in Lithuanian, she told her father in Plymouth: “Thank-you. I love you.”

“We have a code that exists in world sport, it is called the WADA Code, it is constantly being revised in order to stay up to date with the latest anti-doping and judiciary developments.

“The WADA code sets the standard in sport and it is one that all national governing bodies should operate under. Whatever the sport may be, from playing with a ball on a pitch, running in lanes on a track, or even racing bicycles through our city streets, each competitor should be subject to the same rules.

“This is not to help the person who cheats or errs, it is there to protect the athletes who respect the rules. Each time those athletes step into competition they need to know that everybody they compete against is held accountable to one code.”

She says: ‘They’re looking for unsung heroes who have gone the extra mile. I’ve seen a list of people who have been nominated – they’re all massively inspirational. It’ll be difficult to decide who does it. There are so many amazing people on the list.

‘The nominees should be people in the local community who have gone the extra mile and have done special things for their community and helping others. People who may not normally be part of the Olympics have the chance to participate by carrying the Olympic flame.’
